Choosing the Perfect Case for Your SLIM MIDI Interface and Raspberry Pi Setup

Building a custom MIDI interface with a Raspberry Pi and SLIM MIDI HAT is an exciting project that opens up endless possibilities for music creation and control. However, once you've got your electronics working perfectly, you'll need a proper case to protect your investment and create a professional-looking setup.

Choosing the right enclosure might seem like a simple afterthought, but it's actually crucial for both protecting your hardware and ensuring easy access to all the ports you need. Whether you're a weekend tinkerer or building something for professional use, the case you choose will affect everything from portability to long-term durability.

In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore all the best housing options for different Raspberry Pi models paired with SLIM MIDI interfaces, from budget-friendly solutions to custom 3D-printed enclosures that offer the perfect fit.

Which Cases to Use for SLIM MIDI Interfaces and Your Raspberry Pi?

Raspberry Pi Zero Family

The compact Raspberry Pi Zero opens up more diverse housing possibilities, each with its own advantages depending on your specific requirements.

Custom 3D-Printed Cases

For the ultimate in form and function, we offer precision-engineered cases in our shop, available in both resin and nylon materials. This represents the most compact solution possible for housing both your Raspberry Pi Zero and SLIM MIDI HAT together.

These cases are designed specifically for this hardware combination, eliminating any guesswork about fit and providing the most professional appearance.

Laser-Cut Plexiglass Protection Cases

These sleek, modern-looking cases are available from the usual electronics retailers for just a few euros. We don't stock these ourselves since it's impossible to compete with their ultra-low pricing, but they represent excellent value for money.

DIY Option for Makers: If you have access to a 3D printer or laser cutter, you can create your own custom case using available 3D models. These designs typically include precise cutouts for the I/O ports positioned above the HAT, ensuring perfect alignment and professional results.

Important Hardware Note: For both options, you'll need to plan your spacing carefully:
- First level:  9mm spacers
- Second level:  5mm spacers

This ensures proper clearance and prevents any interference between components.

Transparent ABS Cases from AliExpress

Another excellent option that balances cost and quality are the transparent ABS cases available on platforms like AliExpress. These cases are dimensioned perfectly for the HAT and Raspberry Pi combination – you just need to drill two holes in the top section to accommodate the jack connectors.

Raspberry Pi 3/4/5 Models

For the full-sized Raspberry Pi models (Pi 3, 4, and 5), you have plenty of straightforward options that won't break the bank.

Basic Plastic, Acrylic, and Transparent Cases

These standard cases work perfectly well for most applications. You can easily find them on popular platforms like Amazon or AliExpress at very reasonable prices. The modification required is minimal – you simply need to drill two 8mm or 10mm holes to provide access to the MIDI jack connectors.

The beauty of this approach lies in its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. Most hobbyists will find these cases more than adequate for their needs.
